I have been one lazy pirate as far as keeping this blog alive goes. Too many distractions I guess, with college football in full swing and the holiest month of the year upon us. This pirate loves him some trick or treating.
Ill sart with the QB dilemma at Texas Tech. In one way its a dilemma that I dont mind having, as the nagging question is: "which bad ass do we start?". Taylor Potts posted huge numbers the first 2 weeks of the season. Then last week he suffered a concussion after two consecutive sacks against New Mexico early in the game, sending him to the hospital and leaving the pirate offense captainless. Enter Steven Sheffield, AKA "Sticks". Tech's backup junior QB.
Sticks came in and completely fucking owned the New Mexico secondary. Up to the point of Sticks' entry, the game had been a frustratingly close contest namely due to the unpredictable and genius blitz package New Mexico's defensive coordinator designed for the contest. Sticks displayed something that Potts hasn't in being able to scramble from the pocket and complete throws on the run. He was making throws that Potts would have thrown away or taken a sack on, as the New Mexico defense continued to load the box, and rush three to five people a play.
He led the Red Raiders to an impressive ass kicking, throwing several TD passes.
After this game, I had several heated conversations with fellow sports fans about Texas Tech's offensive system making mediocre QBs shine. After all, Tech runs 80-90 plays a game and throws the ball over 70% of the time... and they were playing shitty New Mexico, right?
WRONG.
Tech's offense IS unconventional, and yes, we do throw the ball alot. But so fucking what!! You still have to be a talented QB to even come close to being able to operate Tech's complex offensive machine. And yes, it is a fucking machine. Tech leads the nation in passing production, and can score from their own 10 yard line as easily as from their opponents goal line.
The nomenclature of this offense alone would confuse most high school football coaches.
For a QB to successfully operate the Tech juggernaut takes BRAINS as well as ABILITY.
Potts and Sheffield have no shortage of both.
So after the NM game I wondered what the condition of Potts would be for Kansas State. The wildcats arent a big contender by any means, but they are always dangerous under head coach Bill Snyder... and they sport a better defense than NM and a better secondary than Texas in my opinion.
Tech head coach Mike Leach has a "never tell" policy as far as injuries go. So, as this last week progressed, us mere fans were kept in the dark about Potts' condition for the K State game. Then, around midweek, the rumor mill spit out that Sticks was going to start. I have MAD respect for Mike Leach, and I stand by whatever decision he makes... but I gotta tell ya'.....
this one made me pucker a little. Sure, Sticks came in and tore apart NM...yeah he showed mobility... and made pressured throws successfully. But he hasnt played a team like Texas, in which Potts started and kicked ass. Not that K state is even comparable, but this IS conference play, and this game counts. I chalked Leach's decision up to inside info that only he has... maybe Potts is still dinged upstairs from the concussion? Ive had a few of those myself, and they can really fuck with youur perception skills, which isnt good when you have 250-300 lb monsters trying to take your head off.
Come game day with K state however, Sticks started, Sticks kicked fucking ass, and Sticks nearly made the record books with his performance... COMPLETELY OWNING THE WILDCAT DEFENSE.
Tech's defense kicked ass as well but thats another blog. I gotta throw that in there because im a defensive minded kinda pirate.
So now, for the first time in Mike Leach's storied history, there is a QB controversy at Texas Tech. We play Nebraska next week.... in Nebraska. The Cornhuskers defense is by far the greates test so far this season. Under Bo Pelini, the Nebraska D will come to the party with a FULL KEG OF WHOOP ASS. Suprisingly, Leach announced in the K State postgame show that Sticks will get the nod to start at Nebraska. I guess my questions will all be answered next week in Lincoln.... we'll see if cinderella's pumpkin gets smashed the fuck up, or if the Cornhusker defense becomes the Tech Offense's next gridiron BITCH.

Something else thats is really starting to piss me off is the NFL's rules for protecting QBs. During the Baltimore/ Patriots game last week, Tom "my tampon is loose" Brady was inadvertently slapped in the knee by a baltimore defender during a pass rush. Brady threw the ball, then a milisecond later, a Baltimore defender, in a diving leap, (which began before the ball left prom queen's hand) brushed Brady's left knee. The violence of this contact is probably less than what you use to pet your dog. Brady didnt fall down, but upon seeing the pass fall incomplete, pointed to his knee and verbally engaged a referee, who THEN threw a flag.
Time the fuck out!!!! I played football at both the high school and collegiate levels, at both defensive end and linebacker. Accidental contact with a QB after he throws the ball has always been a controversy. Yeah I get protecting QBs... but giving them a fucking skirt???
Why dont we do what Ray Lewis suggests and put a fucking flag or buzzer on QBs that defenders can activate, deeming them "down". Its getting that ridiculous.
Its a violent contact sport... and defenders thrive on contact..... if you are a QB and you are getting hit too much, take it up with the O line.... dont predicate a bunch of stupid rules that make this a pussy sport.

Finally...... I gotta dog on the chickenfuckers. I live in a mid sized Texas town situated around and dependent on a U.S Air Force base. Its also smack dab in the middle of the buckle of the bible belt. In other words, we have one big cocktail of rednecks, airmen, and religious zealots. An interesting combination to say the least. Before anyone gets pissy or their feelings hurt, im definitely not dogging on the military and in this case not the bible beaters either. Its the Rednecks. Namely the kind of rednecks we have here. Im a sort of tattoo enthusiast, and have over 50 myself (my white trash blog will come later all you haters). Recently, I was in a tattoo shop here in town, talking with the artistic genius that does all my work. Mad props to Stone. While I was there, a guy came in and got a tat of a confederate flag on his arm by another artist. It had the cliche' "the south will rise again" bullshit above it. Now im all about civil rights and freedom of speech. If you want a fucking swatstika tatooed on your body, then by God... thats your right. What really pisses me off is the lack of belief or knowledge in what you believe in.
This fucking redneck was sitting there getting his confederate tat and just spewing all kinds of bullshit rhetoric that just wasnt true. He was saying how he was a son of the confederacy, and that his great great grandfather was a confederate captain. I study U.S history like a hobby and am a U.S war enthusiast, so I engaged him in conversation. This guy didnt have a clue. He changed the conversation to dog fighting, which made me want to rip his 'confederate" branded arm off and beat him with it.
Sadly, it isnt hard to find a truck or living room wall here adorned with the confederate orange X. What makes it worse is that most of them are doing it because of hate, not because of actual cultural understanding. Im a Libertarian, and all for civil and political rights. If you want to espouse hate towards another ethnicity... at least do it with taste.

Its good to know that if the south does indeed "Rise Again", then at least it will be governed by redneck, sister fucking, beer swilling hillbillies that will be easy to usurp.

Jolly Roger Out

A VMA full of pussies

This will be short and sweet... just a little bitch session and observation I made when watching the video of Kanye West disrespecting Taylor Swift at the VMAS.
Let me predicate this by saying that im a fan of neither and didnt actually watch the VMA thing on tv... but it was hard to miss the circus coverage this shit got over the weekend.
If you didn 't watch the video or see it live then you probably dont know what the hell im talking about, but in a nutshell, Taylor Swift won an award and kanye west took the mic away from her during the acceptance speech and started talking shit.
What I found interesting is that nobody did anything. Kanye stood there talking shit to this poor girl and acting like a fucking thug and nobody did a goddamn thing. Taylor stood there looking like a doe in headlights while this stupid degenerate punk went gangster on her.
Out of the thousands of people crowded into the Radio City Music Hall in New York fucking city, not one person did or said anything to help Taylor, or at least get ganster boy off the stage.

I wish Taylor Swift had a big tatted up cornfed boyfriend or relative in the audience. Im talking about a Brian Urlacher or a Batista looking motherfucker... someone that could have walked up to the stage, grabbed that gangster wanna be fuck by his fuzzy hair, and SLAPPED THAT BOY IN THE MOUTH.
But in a NYC crowd of liberal pussies I guess that would have been too much to ask.

Think about this.... If somebody yanked a mic away from Beyonce during one of her acceptance speeches what do you think would happen? Kanye and fifty others like him would be (literally) up in arms.
If Taylor Swift was my relative or (even better) my girlfriend, I would be in jail tonight... and Kanye would be having a hard time shitting out that grill and goldplated teeth that I knocked down his fucking throat.

Big 12 football

I really dont want this to be exclusively a sports blog, but it is september which means the start of college football. I am a HUGE Texas Tech fan. I attended Tech from 98-00 and was a member of the football team before an injury and too many bodyshots off of cheerleaders made me realize I needed to focus more on my academic pursuits instead of the next Lubbock barn party.
That said... the big 12 south had a suprising opening weekend. Both Tech and UT played tampon state for their openers and dispensed an unsuprising ASSWHIPPING. OU opended with slightly more potent BYU (ranked 20) in what should have been a solid thumping by the Sooners. WRONG.
BYU came out hitting and playing smashmouth football for 2 quarters, before knocking the shit out of OU quarterback Sam Bradford on a linebacker stunt, which sent Bradford to the sidelines for the duration. BYU didnt let up and out hit and out scored the Sooners on the way to the first major upset of the college season.
Now I dont like to see anyone get injured, especially a player the caliber of Bradford.... but there is a HUGE difference between being injured and being HURT. Anyone that has played football, especially at the collegiate level knows that painful collisions are a fact of life. You are going to get hit and sometimes it is going to hurt. Alot. Quarterbacks and ball carriers are more in danger of getting plowed, but anyone between the sidelines is fair game. Sam Bradford took several hits prior to the one that injured him. Id venture to say more than he took in any game last year.
When you have an offensive line that gives 240 lb linebackers and 300 lb defensive linemen free reign free bellringers on your quarterback, he isnt going to last very long. The offensive line was the major question for OU coming into this game... now I guess we know the answer. All the pre season hype about the potency of this offense means jack shit now... Im one of those that bought into the hype, even picking OU to win the south.
Bradford will be back in 2-4 weeks, but if the O line continues to play like fucking prom queens then Bradford's last dance will be against pass rush specialists Miami, or a blitzing UT linebacker.
Bradford has shown that he cant take abuse (Tech game '07).... his fat boys up front arent helping him any.
Another hit for OU is the loss of all galaxy tight end Jermaine (sp?) Gresham. Hes's out for the season.... and guess what? His back up is a fucking walk-on! No disrespect to the Rudys of the world, but those are REALLY big shoes to fill. And Gresham could block too.
OU coach Bob Stoops did his usual preseason hype up like he does every year. OU is going to be great. We have so many returning starters. We looked really good in spring ball and our scrimages. I respect Stoops alot, but shouldnt he just keep his mouth shut? When you brag to Sooner nation about how great OU is going to be, you are setting alot of high expectations.... and when those expectations arent met (i.e BYU) then you have alot of pissed off fans. There were people threatening to sell their season tickets, which is fucking stupid if you ask me, but it had THAT much effect on Sooner nation morale.
OU needs to button up, get an offensive line scheme together and keep their mouths shut.
They have Miami in 2 weeks..........in my opinion, trigger shy Bradford+ no Gresham= NO CHANCE.
The other okie team, OK State was polar opposite their Sooner neighbors in their opener against potent Georgia. OSU dominated Georgia for most of the game, even along the defensive line, which was a major question going in. OSU'S QB/ WR connection of Zac Robinson to Dez Bryant has heisman potential, and OSU sported a pretty impressive defense, which they havent had for several years, switching from a 4-3 to a modified 3-4 that puts a speedy coverage linebacker in play. OSU was my Darkhorse in the south and they are living up to that role.

Baylor, the joke of the south the past few years, has sprung back to life. Behind superstar quarterback Griffin and a re tooled aggressive defense, the Bears posted an impressive win over Wake forest. Baylor will upset one of the big dogs this year, hopefully UT.

As for the other south team..the maroon panty wastes in college station, well....
WE DONT SPEAK AGGIE AROUND HERE.
Though they did post an impressive win over...... well....
who the hell cares? >:)

This blog has gotten way too long and my beer is getting cold.......

Red Raider out.....

setting sail

So im new to this blogging thing.. ive posted in alot of other peoples blogs but never really managed my own.
